Meadowside Medical PracticeTrainers: - Dr Mark Denver and Dr David McDonnell Practice: - Lancaster is a University City and market town within easy reach of the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Northwest coast. The practice is centrally placed in a detached Victorian building to the south of the city. We have been a training practice for over thirty years and have benefited from over thirty registrars. Almost all have continued with a career in general practice. Most of our registrars in the past have taken the Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners exam, three have gained distinction. Outside normal practice work the partners have varied interests:-
Dr Andrew Craven is the Associate Director in General Practice Education at Manchester University. He has an interest in psychiatry, sports medicine and diabetes. Dr David McDonnell is a trainer in general practice and currently supervises a GP Registrar. He has an interest in ophthalmology, ENT and respiratory medicine. Dr Mark Denver is also a trainer in general practice. He is a GP clinical Assistant in A&E at the RLI, he has an interest in Sports Medicine and is also a member of Med-Alert, a voluntary group of doctors who attend accidents in the local area. Dr Morna Murgatroyd is an approved family planning training practice and Dr Murgatroyd is a family planning instructing doctor, she will be happy to train you towards the Family Planning Certificate including intra-uterine contraceptive device instruction. Dr Rachel Gilbert has an interest in family planning and Epilepsy, she is the FY2 supervisor and also supervises the Medical Students Dr Lindsey Waller is interested in gynaecology and orthopaedics, she also assists in supervising the medical students.
All the partners take part in the trainees training programme. You will be a valued member of the team, involved in all aspects of running the practice. The whole practice team is willing to provide assistance and support. The practice has an average list size of approximately 7150 patients therefore the workload is not excessive. We allow protected time for teaching as well as for study, project work, audit and relevant educational attachments. There will be ample opportunity to gain experience in minor surgery and time to pursue your own interests. We have our own practice-based education programme and meet weekly for either clinical discussions or business meetings. Trainees are encouraged to contribute and critically appraise the practice. We have a full complement of both full-time and part-time reception staff, a Practice Manager, Administrative Assistant and Secretary. Our three Practice Nurses perform all the normal routine nursing procedures, they also run our diabetic and asthma clinics. We have a Treatment Room Nurse and Phlebotomist. At weekends the trainee can take part in some on-call sessions for BAY-CALL, we have two partners who regularly work for BAY-CALL. You will have your own consulting room. A diagnostic bag and emergency medication are provided. We welcome GP Specialist Trainees for twelve months and Medical SHO’s for 6 months, and would be delighted to show you round the practice.
